What does ‘child in need’ mean?

If you are a ‘child in need’ it means that your local Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust have noticed that you might need extra services or support to help you as a young carer, so that you can grow and develop like other young people your age.

What is a young carer?

You may be a young carer without realising it.  If you are under 18 and you help to look after someone in your family who has a disability or illness, then you are a young carer.

You could be looking after an adult or your siblings – it doesn’t matter who – you are still a young carer.

Being a young carer can mean that you are doing lots of jobs at home such as helping someone with personal care or doing everyday tasks like food shopping.  Being a young carer should not interfere with being a young person – this is why you might be entitled to help and support.
