Social Security Benefits

At what age am I entitled to Child Benefit and Children’s Tax Credit?
If you are responsible for a child then you are entitled to claim and receive Child Benefit at any age.

If you are over 16, you can also claim Children’s Tax Credit when you have dependent children for whom you are receiving child benefit.
At what age can I claim Jobseekers Allowance?
If you are 16 or 17 and have left school you usually have to sign up for a Jobskills training programme but in certain circumstances you might be able to claim Jobseekers Allowance when you are unemployed.
At what age can I get Income Support?
If you are 16 or over and pregnant or responsible for a child, or estranged from your parents or someone acting in place of your parents, then you may be entitled to Income Support even while still at school. Like Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support is a weekly amount of money for you to live on.

If you think you may be entitled to any benefit you should seek advice from the Children’s Law Centre.
When can I claim Working Tax Credit?
If you are 16 or over and responsible for a child, and you work more than 16 hours per week, then you could be entitled to some Working Tax Credit on top of your wages. This can be claimed either by someone bringing up a child on their own or by a couple.

If you are 16 or over and suffer from a physical or mental disability which puts you at a disadvantage in terms of getting a job, then you may be entitled to Tax Credits on top of your earnings, provided you work more than 16 hours per week.

Claims for these benefits should be made to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
Am I entitled to Disability Living Allowance?
If you have a disability and need help with your personal care, or you have difficulty walking or getting around, then you may be entitled to Disability Living Allowance. Your parents normally claim this allowance for you but you can claim this benefit in your own right from the age of 16.
Am I entitled to Carer’s Allowance?
If you are aged 16 or over and regularly care for a disabled person such as a disabled parent and they are in receipt of either Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance, then you may be entitled to Carer’s Allowance for looking after them.
